Do you need a confidence boost? Maybe you'd like to improve your relationships, friendships or social life? You can start by working on your smile! Smiling shows that you are a nice, caring person who enjoys being happy and wants others to be happy as well. Here are a few tips to beautify your smile...
Brush regularly - Brushing is the key to a great smile. It removes food particles that bacteria feed on, cleans teeth, and freshens breath. A toothpaste with fluoride helps strengthen teeth. It's recommended that you brush for at least two minutes to allow it to do its work.
Floss daily - Flossing removes the bacteria from in between your teeth that your toothbrush does not reach, which helps prevent gum disease. It's recommended that you floss twice a day, but if you only do it once daily, be sure to floss before bedtime. Did you know that when you sleep, you produce less saliva, which leaves teeth and gums particularly vulnerable to bacteria?
Visit your dentist - It's recommended that you visit your dentist at least twice a year for thorough cleanings. Your dentist can spot early signs of gum disease, which is more easily treated when caught in the beginning stages.
Eat a healthy diet - Eat plenty of dairy and other calcium-rich foods in your diet. Calcium helps maintain strong bones and teeth, and the vitamin C in citrus fruits boosts gum health.
Don't smoke or use tobacco - People who smoke are four times more likely than nonsmokers to have gum disease, according to a study by the Journal of Periodontology. Using smokeless tobacco increases a person's risk for oral cancers, including lip, tongue, cheeks, and gums. Also, tobacco products contribute to bad breath.
Whiten your teeth - Whitening is a very safe procedure that will not harm your teeth as long as you follow the directions. Over-the-counter whitening products are effective for minor staining; professional-strength whitening products are better for more-severe yellowing.
Use lip balm - Before going to bed and throughout the day, apply lip balm. Your lips are sensitive and need care and rest. Very dried and chapped lips can also be helped by applying sunflower oil on them. Also, drink plenty of water. Chapped lips are often a sign of dehydration.
